FYS #18: “Song Of The Century/21st Century Breakdown” by Green Day

“Song Of The Century/21st Century Breakdown” by Green Day

Performed by David Baron
Mixed by Scott Effman

I’ve been doing a bunch of Dave Matthews covers as of late (check out my YouTube channel to see those: http://www.youtube.com/DBaron84), and while those have been really fun, I thought I’d try something a little different this week.  I loved Green Day’s last album, “American Idiot,” and this new one’s been growing on me a lot since it came out last week.  Just bought tix to see them in San Jose, and while the verdict’s still out on whether “21st Century Breakdown” is better than their last rock opera, I highly recommend getting the new album.

I learned the music by ear and I’m reading the lyrics off the hardcover book that came with the deluxe edition CD (yes, I’m still a sucker for buying actual CDs…there’s nothing like going to Best Buy and tearing the plastic wrap off something you’ve been waiting to listen to for weeks…it’s like an early Christmas present!)  The chords are pretty easy but the melodies are high and the words are lightning fast…turns out playing punk rock on the piano was harder than I thought!

You can thank my buddy Scott Effman, New York producer-extraordinaire for the killer mix.  We both came out of South Florida and are pursuing our music dreams on opposite ends of the U.S….hopefully you’ll hear a lot more of his mixes in videos to come!

Thanks for listening as always, and I’ll see you all in Malibu next weekend when I take the stage with Lifehouse, Meiko, Reel Big Fish, and Eve6 at the BuFest Music Festival on Saturday, May 30.  See you then!

Peace,
David

FYS #15: “Thick Skin” by David Baron

To Download “Thick Skin”: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=251832596&s=143441

Lyrics:

Thick Skin

I’m trying to develop a thick skin
Everybody seems to make it out okay
But not me baby

I’m trying to develop a thick skin
You got a noose where my confidence it hangs
But baby I’m changing

Cause I found myself a girl I’m dying to see
She’s beautiful and she wants to see me

So hit my face and cut my skin
Call me every bad name you been thinking
My friends they let me down today
And as sure as you can hurt my pride
I got a girl and she makes me come alive
My guilt and fear, success and shame
Well I’m throwin’ em all away

(Repeat)

Cause I’m a winner
Cause I’m a winner
So let your hair down
And look around, around, around
Cause you’re a winner

I’m trying to develop a thick skin
Everybody seems to make it out okay
But not me baby

FYS #14: “Nothing To Fear” by David Baron, Live on PCTV w/ Interview

To Download “Nothing To Fear”: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=292543683&s=143441

Singer-songwriter David Baron performs “Nothing To Fear” and is interviewed live on PCTV during 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Lyrics:

Nothing To Fear

I never knew what I was doing when I worked down at Central Park
I just kept the meter running till the boss left after dark
I been feeling like putty that you play with in the palm of your hand
I let you roll me all over and sculpt me into your idea of a man

And the bars they’re all closed at 2 a.m. across this town
That’s about the time I call you when I want you around

I been a little uptight in the meanest way
And I been working all night to push you away
But I’m ready
Yeah I’m ready
I kinda thought of myself as someone scared
I’m never acting on a moment till I’m prepared
But I’m ready
Yeah I’m ready
I got nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way

I was a runner on the racetrack thinking I could do it alone
I was a little child crying I don’t need anyone
I was a man obsessed with being the best in line
Just worried everybody’s in a hurry to leave me behind

So when you asked me do I want you and I barely made a sound
It was because I thought you’d leave me all alone on the ground

I been a little uptight in the meanest way
And I been working all night to push you away
But I’m ready
Yeah I’m ready
I kinda thought of myself as someone scared
I’m never acting on a moment till I’m prepared
But I’m ready
Yeah I’m ready
I got nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way
Nothing to fear I’m on my way

FYS #12: “Kids” – David Baron Live on Park City Television

David Baron – Kids (Live on Park City Television)

To Download “Kids”: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=292543683&s=143441

Singer-songwriter David Baron performs live on PCTV during 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Lyrics:

Kids

I wanna be a kid again
I wanna walk with friends
I wanna live without a care in the world
I wanna live without my fears and my doubts
Will you hold my hand?
I wanna be a kid again

Oh to be a kid again
You try hard to fit in
You fail and lose your innocence
I was afraid of heights
And I tried with all my might
To grow up as fast as I can
I wanna be a kid again

Then sometimes I think back on the days when I ran and cried
The days when my hands were tied
The ways I escaped
Fell so hard on my face almost lead me to suicide
And now there’s nowhere to hide
It’s only a game

I wanna live without my fears and my doubts
Like a child safe and warm
I wanna be a kid back in my mother’s arms
I wanna be a kid again
I wanna be a kid again

FYS #10: “Love Is Just A Lie” – David Baron Live on Park City Television

Singer-songwriter David Baron performs live on PCTV during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Lyrics:

Love Is Just A Lie

I was leaning on the corner of the bar
There was beer spilling on my shoes
When I saw her standing there and thought I got nothing to lose
I started walking when I see a sketchy dude
Walking to her with the same idea
So I turn around and order up another beer

Now I’m watching their exchange
And thinking how they’re all the same
The girl looks anxious as he tries in vain to change her mind

Love is just a lie
Something the girls tell each other so that they sleep better at night
Even the worst get a taste if you play your cards right
Cause love is just a lie

You were crying on the corner of my bed when your lover had just run off
You were getting over him and I was just getting off
I leaned over and I whispered in your ear
You know it would feel so good
Your heart was broken so I had my way with damaged goods

You were on your way to something real and nothing came
And when you found out what you couldn’t get
You settled for me instead

Love is just a lie
Something the girls tell each other so that they sleep better at night
Even the worst get a taste if you play your cards right
Love is just a lie
I’m in a pack of wolves looking for another deer caught in the headlights
Am I a notch on your belt or your shining knight?
Cause love is just a lie
Love is just a lie
